NAIROBI, 8 October 2026 – Nairobi County sanitation workers have returned to Eastleigh to complete the clearing of blocked drainage channels ahead of forecast El Niño rains, according to The Eastleigh Voice.
On Wednesday, the team known as the Green Army worked on Waudo Street in the California area, digging deeper into drainage channels and removing sludge and waste left behind after an earlier clean-up.
The teams returned after residents complained that the previous work had not been completed.
City askaris arrested several women who operate small roadside restaurants along the street. They were accused of dumping waste into the drainage channels, while some had structures extending over the channels. Other roadside structures had been demolished earlier.

Members of the Green Army said the roadside structures had made their work difficult. They also said waste is repeatedly dumped back into the channels after they are cleaned.
On August 26, the Kenya Meteorological Department said Nairobi was expected to receive above-average rainfall from October to December, with the rains expected to begin in the second or third week of October.
The department said El Niño was evolving towards “a very strong event.”
