Kenya, April 19, 2026 - Motorists in Mombasa have been cautioned of a major traffic disruption along key routes, including Saba Saba, Buxton, and Nyali Bridge, due to ongoing construction works.
In a statement, the National Police Service said that the congestion has been triggered by the construction of pillars between Nyali Bridge and Kengeleni, which is expected to take several weeks to complete.
Motorists have been advised to take alternative routes if possible and observe lane discipline when approaching the area to ease congestion.
As of now, a diversion has been created along the Kisauni–Malindi–Mombasa Road, with motorists being redirected towards Mishomoroni, exiting at the Kisauni Junction.
"The NPS is working with relevant agencies to restore normal traffic flow. Additional police officers have been deployed to the area and will take stern action against anyone violating traffic rules," NPS warned.
"We urge motorists to exercise patience and maintain lane discipline. The NPS reaffirms its steadfast commitment to maintaining law and order on our roads."
The announcement comes two weeks after the Mombasa County Executive Committee member Daniel Manyala announced a temporary restriction on the movement of heavy commercial vehicles along the Northern Mainland Roads.
The restriction, set to last until July 1, targets heavy commercial vehicles weighing over 10 tons, in a move aimed at easing congestion and enhancing safety along the routes.
The vehicles shall be restricted to use the route from am to 9:30 am, and from 3:30 pm to 8 pm.
Among the roads where vehicle use shall be restricted during peak hours are Nyali Bridge, Fidel Odinga Road, Links Road, and New Malindi Road.
Others include the Old Malindi Road, Zakhem Road, Dr. Felix Road, Mt.Kenya Road, and Ras Kisauni Road.
"In Exercise of the powers conferred by section 26 (1) (c) of the Mombasa County Roads Act, 2016, by virtue of the Fourth Schedule part 2 section 5 of the Constitution of Kenya and the Executive Committee Member responsible for matters relating to Transport and Infrastructure, County Government of Mombasa gazettes the temporary restriction of the usage of the Northern Mainland Roads of Mombasa County by heavy commercial vehicles above ten (10) tons, from the 3rd April, 2026 to 1st July, 2026," the notice read.
