MOGADISHU, 14 October 2026 The Governor of Banadir and Mayor of Mogadishu, Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein Muungaab, on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for the full rebuild of Bartamaha School, one of Somalia's oldest schools.
The school was built during the colonial era, before independence in 1960, and has educated generations of students, according to the Banadir Regional Administration. After more than 66 years, the building has deteriorated and suffered severe damage, putting students and teachers at risk.
The project is expected to transform the school into a modern facility and create a safer learning environment.
The mayor said the rebuilding is part of the administration's efforts to improve education services and ensure student and teacher safety.

Muungaab denied rumours circulating on social media that the school's land had been sold.
"It is regrettable that baseless reports are being spread about the sale of the Bartamaha School land; public property must be discussed on the basis of facts and official evidence," he said.
He added that the Federal Government, led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, places special priority on developing educational facilities and that the rebuilding is part of efforts to advance education.
The ceremony was attended by the Director General of the Banadir Regional Education Department, Abdirahman Ali Mohamed, and the District Commissioner of Shingani.
