Somalia, 27 May 2026 — Somali clan elders said a mediation effort between the government and opposition under the Salvation Forum has stalled, underscoring hurdles to resolving the election dispute.
Members of the Somali Salvation Forum and clan elders met at Hotel Jazeera in Mogadishu to review an earlier mediation mandate given to the elders.
Garaad Jama Garaad Ali, one of the Somali clan elders involved in the effort, told reporters that the elders had been unable to deliver the message they were asked to convey to the federal government representatives.
“We were unable to deliver the message they asked us to take to the other side,” Ali said.

On April 29, members of the Salvation Forum met some Somali traditional elders and asked them to mediate the political dispute over the country’s electoral process.
The latest meeting comes as political differences remain unresolved, particularly over the electoral model and the country’s broader political direction.
The Salvation Forum has also previously announced a planned demonstration in Mogadishu on June 4, a move that could add further pressure to the political situation in the capital.
