United States, 1 July 2026 - France underlined their credentials as one of the favourites to lift the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 3-0 victory over Sweden in the Round of 32, inspired once again by captain Kylian Mbappé, who struck twice to send Didier Deschamps' side comfortably into the last 16.
Mbappé's latest masterclass, combined with a fine finish from Bradley Barcola, ensured France maintained their perfect record at the tournament with four wins from four matches. Les Bleus will now face Paraguay in the Round of 16 as they continue their pursuit of a third World Cup title.
Played before more than 86,000 spectators at the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, the encounter pitted one of the tournament's most prolific attacks against a Sweden side hoping to spring another surprise after reaching the knockout rounds as one of the best third-placed teams.
France wasted little time asserting their dominance.

The breakthrough finally arrived on the stroke of half-time.
Collecting the ball on the left edge of the penalty area, Mbappé cut inside onto his stronger right foot before unleashing a powerful strike into the far corner, leaving Zetterström with no chance. The goal capped a dominant first-half display and gave France a deserved 1-0 lead heading into the interval.
France emerged for the second half with the same attacking intent, and it took just eight minutes to double their advantage.
Michael Olise threaded a perfectly weighted pass through Sweden's defence for Bradley Barcola, who raced onto the ball before confidently lifting his finish into the roof of the net. The goal effectively knocked the wind out of Sweden's challenge and highlighted the fluidity of France's exciting front line.

Sweden attempted to respond by committing more players forward, but France's defence, led by William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano, remained composed. Mike Maignan was rarely troubled as Les Bleus continued to dictate the tempo.
Mbappé then put the result beyond any doubt in the 74th minute.
After another slick passing move, the Real Madrid forward found space inside the penalty area before calmly guiding his finish beyond the Swedish goalkeeper to make it 3-0. The brace took his tally to six goals at the tournament, drawing him level with Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race while moving him to 18 career World Cup goals, just one behind Messi's all-time total despite having played significantly fewer matches.
With the result secured, Deschamps rotated his squad during the closing stages, introducing fresh legs while preserving key players for the next round. The French supporters responded by giving Mbappé a standing ovation when he was substituted late in the match after another unforgettable performance.
France's victory extended an extraordinary run of form.
Les Bleus have now won all four of their matches at the 2026 World Cup, scoring freely while conceding very few chances. Their attacking quartet of Mbappé, Dembélé, Olise and Barcola has emerged as arguably the most dangerous in the competition, with opponents struggling to cope with their pace, movement and creativity.
The match also saw Mbappé and Deschamps reach significant World Cup milestones. Mbappé's brace further strengthened his place among the greatest goalscorers in World Cup history, while Deschamps continued to enhance his remarkable record as one of the competition's most successful coaches.
For Sweden, the defeat brought an end to a respectable tournament. Having battled through the group stage to reach the knockout rounds, they were ultimately outclassed by a French side operating at an exceptional level. Despite moments of promise through Isak and Gyökeres, Graham Potter's men were unable to match France's quality in either penalty area.
France now turn their attention to a Round of 16 showdown against Paraguay, with confidence soaring after another emphatic display. If Mbappé continues producing performances of this calibre and France maintain their current form, Les Bleus will remain among the strongest contenders to lift the World Cup trophy on North American soil.
