UK , July 13, 2026 - Manchester United are in advanced negotiations to sign Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, with discussions now entering their final stages. The proposed transfer has accelerated after United ended their pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Éderson, making Tielemans the club's priority target to strengthen the midfield ahead of the 2026–27 season.
The move, first reported by The Athletic's David Ornstein, has gathered significant momentum, with all parties working to finalise an agreement. Tielemans is understood to be keen on the switch to Old Trafford despite interest from other clubs, raising optimism within United that the deal can be completed soon.
Manchester United had spent much of the summer pursuing Atalanta's Brazilian midfielder Éderson, viewing him as a key addition to Carrick's new-look squad. However, negotiations failed to progress, prompting the club to explore alternative options.
Tielemans quickly emerged as the preferred replacement due to his Premier League experience, tactical intelligence and proven consistency. Unlike Éderson, the Belgian requires no adaptation period to English football and is viewed as a player capable of making an immediate impact.
Tielemans remains under contract at Villa Park until June 2028, meaning Villa are under no obligation to sell. Nevertheless, United believe there is an opportunity to reach an agreement, while the player reportedly favours a move to Old Trafford.

Since arriving at Aston Villa on a free transfer from Leicester City in 2023, Tielemans has established himself as one of the Premier League's most complete midfielders.

One point United will likely assess is Tielemans' recent fitness. During Belgium's World Cup campaign, the midfielder suffered an injury during the warm-up before the quarter-final against Spain and was withdrawn from the starting lineup. Tielemans later indicated that accumulated fatigue had forced him to stop, though the issue was not considered a major long-term concern. United's medical staff are expected to conduct the usual assessments if negotiations progress to the final stages.
