Kenya, January 19 2026 - Kirinyaga County is steadily positioning itself as a growing hub in Kenya’s digital transformation following major government investments in connectivity, digital learning, and youth empowerment.
During a visit to Kianwe Primary School in Kirinyaga West Sub-County, Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, Hon. William Kabogo Gitau, together with members of the Mt. Kenya Leaders Caucus and the Secretary to the Cabinet, Ms. Mercy Wanjau, E.G.H, highlighted the milestones achieved under the national digital agenda.
The Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy has rolled out more than 102 kilometers of fiber optic cable across the county, connecting all five sub-counties to the One Government Network (OGN). This development is expected to enhance access to online government services and improve efficiency in public service delivery.
As part of efforts to strengthen digital skills, the government has distributed over 200 computers to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in Ndia, Mwea, and Kirinyaga Central through the Jitume Programme. The initiative aims to equip students with practical digital competencies needed in today’s technology-driven economy.
Public internet access has also expanded, with nine free Wi-Fi hotspots now operational in key areas such as Kutus Market and Kagumo Health Centre. Authorities have already completed surveys for an additional 80 locations earmarked for Phase II of the Digital Superhighway project.
