Kenya, September 2, 2026 - Kenya is expected to experience warmer-than-average temperatures and generally dry weather in September, with several parts of the country likely to record below-average rainfall, according to the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority.
In its monthly forecast, the authority said that regions such as Nairobi, Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Embu, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Makueni, Kitui, Machakos, Taita-Taveta, Kajiado and Marsabit, as well as most parts of Wajir, Mandera, Garissa, Narok, Nakuru and Tana River will remain generally sunny and dry, with occasional rainfall.
Isiolo, Turkana and Samburu are expected to experience mainly sunny and dry conditions, according to Kenya Met.
Furthermore, the authority has forecasted strong southerly to south-easterly/easterly winds during the first half of September, with winds exceeding 25 knots (12.86 metres per second) in parts of Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo, Wajir, Mandera, Garissa, Tana River, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, Taita-Taveta, Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi and Lamu.
According to the service, September is expected to be warmer, with mean temperatures expected to be above average.
Other counties are expected to experience below-average rainfall during the month, including Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Siaya, Vihiga, Nandi, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisumu, Kericho, Nyamira, Kisii, Bomet, Migori and Homa Bay, and Parts of Narok, Nakuru, Baringo and Turkana.
However, Kenya Met has noted that coastal counties including Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa and Kwale, as well as parts of Tana River, Mandera, Wajir and Garissa, are expected to receive near-average rainfall during the forecasted period.

The Authority warned that the anticipated dry conditions could worsen water and pasture shortages in some parts of the country, especially in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) counties, including Isiolo, Garissa, Turkana, Baringo and West Pokot, which remain under drought stress. The dry conditions could also affect other forms of agriculture across the country.
However, it noted that the below-average rainfall forecast in parts of Western Kenya and the Rift Valley may support harvesting activities.
The dry conditions are also expected to have health implications, particularly in Garissa, Mandera, Marsabit, Isiolo, Taita-Taveta, Wajir and Tana River.
Kenya Met said that the conditions could contribute to an increase in respiratory diseases, while strong winds and dust storms could lead to respiratory problems and increase the risk of eye infection.
Motorists in Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi have also been urged to exercise caution because of possible fog formation, conditions that could also occasionally interrupt operations at Wilson and Jomo Kenyatta International airports.
Despite the dry outlook for September, the authority expects conditions to change significantly in October and November, when heavy rainfall is expected in the country.
