Nairobi (Dawan Africa) – At least 11 people have been confirmed dead, and 52 police officers injured during the "Sabasaba" protests held across Kenya on Monday, according to the National Police Service (NPS). The protests, which marked the historical Sabasaba Day, commemorating the 1990 pro-democracy demonstrations, led to widespread unrest and significant destruction in various cities, including Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, and Eldoret.
In a statement issued by the police, it was revealed that while most participants engaged in peaceful demonstrations, some individuals resorted to violence, including property destruction, looting, and attacks on law enforcement officers.
The NPS also confirmed the arrest of 567 individuals, among them MP Gitonga Mukunji, representing Manyatta Constituency, who was detained during the protests.
Preliminary figures released by the police indicated the following casualties and damages:
- Deaths: 11
- Injured police officers: 52
- Injured civilians: 11
- Damaged police vehicles: 12
- Damaged government vehicles: 3
- Damaged civilian vehicles: 4
- Total arrests: 567
The police emphasized that all incidents would be thoroughly investigated, and those found guilty of crimes would be prosecuted in accordance with the law. "Each reported incident will be subject to further investigation, in accordance with the law," the NPS statement said.
The "Sabasaba" protests carry historical significance, remembering the July 7, 1990, protests that ultimately led to the adoption of Kenya's multiparty political system. This year’s protests were seen by many as a continuation of that struggle for democratic reforms.
The police commended their officers for maintaining restraint and professionalism amidst the unrest and encouraged the public to report any information related to ongoing criminal activities.
