Kenya, July 31, 2026 - Kenya is preparing to take a giant leap into the world of space science after the Kenya Space Agency (KSA) announced plans to host the country's first live communication session with astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS), a milestone that could inspire a new generation of scientists, engineers and innovators.
The historic event, scheduled for August 7, 2026, will allow Kenyan students, researchers, educators and members of the public to communicate directly with astronauts orbiting approximately 400 kilometres above the Earth's surface. The session will be held at the Shree Cutch Satsang Swaminarayan Academy in Nairobi's Lang'ata area as part of the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) programme.
According to the Kenya Space Agency, the programme is designed to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education while exposing young people to opportunities in space exploration and technological innovation.
The event is particularly significant because Kenya is the only African country selected to participate in the prestigious programme during the 2026 cycle, placing the country at the centre of Africa's growing space ambitions.
Unlike conventional video calls, the communication will take place through specialised amateur radio technology installed aboard the International Space Station. Participants in Nairobi will have a limited window of a few minutes to interact with astronauts as the station passes over the region at speeds of more than 28,000 kilometres per hour.
During the session, students will have the opportunity to ask questions about life in space, scientific experiments conducted aboard the station, the challenges of long-duration missions and the future of human exploration beyond Earth.
The programme has previously been hosted by schools and institutions across Europe, North America and Asia, but Kenya's participation represents a major milestone for the continent.
The development reflects Kenya's steadily expanding role in the global space industry.
Although many people associate Kenya's space ambitions with recent technological advances, the country's involvement in space science stretches back more than six decades. In 1964, Kenya and Italy established the Broglio Space Centre in Malindi, one of the world's earliest equatorial launch facilities. Between 1967 and 1988, the centre supported the launch of more than 20 rockets and nine satellites.
Kenya's modern space programme accelerated in 2017 with the establishment of the Kenya Space Agency, which was mandated to coordinate and regulate the country's space activities.

A year later, Kenya became a spacefaring nation after the successful deployment of the 1KUNS-PF satellite, developed by the University of Nairobi with support from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The satellite was launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket before being deployed from the International Space Station.
In 2023, the country successfully launched Taifa-1, Kenya's first operational Earth observation satellite, strengthening its capabilities in climate monitoring, agriculture, disaster management and environmental protection.
Earlier this year, Kenya joined Uganda and Egypt in deploying the Climate Camera (ClimCam) project to the International Space Station, marking another milestone in African scientific collaboration.
Beyond the excitement of speaking with astronauts, experts believe the initiative could help reshape perceptions about science and technology careers among young Africans.
The Kenya Space Agency has repeatedly emphasized that investments in space science extend far beyond rockets and satellites. Modern applications include weather forecasting, environmental conservation, precision agriculture, navigation systems, telecommunications, disaster management and national security.
The event could also strengthen Kenya's ambition to become a regional hub for space research, satellite development and technological innovation as Africa increasingly seeks home-grown solutions to climate change, food security and environmental management challenges.
For thousands of Kenyan students, however, the most memorable moment may simply be hearing a voice from outer space answer a question from Earth.
For a country that once watched the global space race from a distance, that moment may symbolize the beginning of an entirely new journey.
