Kenya, 25 April 2026 - The race for Mombasa’s top seat is already taking shape, with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka naming Nyali MP Mohammed Ali, popularly known as Jicho Pevu, as the opposition’s preferred candidate for the 2027 gubernatorial contest, a move that could be interpreted as wooing him to join the party.
Speaking during a rally in Mombasa, Kalonzo signalled an early start to political positioning at the Coast, declaring that Ali would carry the Wiper ticket.
“On behalf of others, I announce Mohammed Ali alias Jicho Pevu will be given a ticket… he is a governor here already,” Kalonzo said.
The endorsement comes as opposition leaders intensify tours in the region, seeking to build momentum and consolidate support well ahead of the next election cycle.
For Ali, the announcement appeared to energise his bid. Addressing supporters, he leaned into his trademark style, mixing humour with confidence, while promising to improve service delivery in the county.
“You can see I am slim, but I am strong like railway steel,” he said, before asking residents whether it was wrong for him to step up and deliver better services.

Ali framed his ambition as part of a broader push for accountable leadership, telling the crowd that his focus would be on improving the lives of Mombasa residents.
The rally brought together key figures from the emerging opposition alliance, including leaders allied to Rigathi Gachagua and Eugene Wamalwa, in what appears to be a coordinated effort to strengthen their presence in the Coast region.
While the 2027 elections are still some time away, the early endorsement signals that parties are beginning to settle on candidates and shape alliances. For Mombasa, it sets the stage for what could be a closely watched and competitive contest.
