The re-run was held after Somalia’s Supreme Court on August 24 annulled the results of the July 30 election covering the Galmudug House of Representatives and local councils, ruling that the process had not been conducted in accordance with the Constitution and electoral laws.
The court said the manner in which the previous election had been administered and conducted did not comply with constitutional principles governing free, fair and impartial elections, and that irregularities had affected the integrity and outcome of the vote.
The case was brought before the Supreme Court by the Towfiiq Party, which had participated in the previous election but did not take part in the re-run.
