Kismayo (Dawan Africa) – Security forces from Jubbaland, in coordination with the Somali National Army’s Danab Commandos, carried out a series of military operations in Lower Juba targeting areas said to be used by Al-Shabaab fighters.
According to a statement from Jubbaland authorities on Saturday the joint operations took place in the rural locations of Orgiyow, Barjala, and Caglibaax. Officials said the areas were suspected to be sites where members of the armed group had been regrouping.
During the operation, forces reported the destruction of several structures and the discovery of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) buried in civilian areas. One individual was arrested on allegations of involvement in previous armed activity.
“The presence of explosives posed a risk to residents,” said Jubbaland authorities, without disclosing further details.
No independent sources have verified the claims made by the regional authorities. The federal government has not commented on the operation.
Military activity in parts of southern Somalia has increased in recent weeks, with local and federal forces targeting areas where armed groups are believed to maintain a presence. Authorities in Jubbaland have stated that security efforts will continue in Lower Juba.
