Jigjiga (Dawan Africa) – The Somali Regional State of Ethiopia has unveiled the design for the redevelopment of the Taiwan Market in Jigjiga, which was destroyed by fire in 2023.
The design was presented on Saturday during a meeting chaired by Somali Regional State Deputy President Ibrahim Osman Farah, attended by the reconstruction committee and project stakeholders. The session focused on procedures and strategies for launching the rebuilding, with participants unanimously agreeing to begin the work without delay.
The new Jigjiga Mall, to be built on the site of the old Taiwan Market, will be developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). According to officials, the complex will be one of the largest and most modern commercial centers in Ethiopia and the wider Horn of Africa region.
Somali Regional State President Mustafa Muhumed Omar stated on social media: “The design of the new Jigjiga Mall, to be built in the old Taiwan Market destroyed by fire in 2023, is unveiled. This modern mall, to be realized through a Public-Private Partnership, will be among the biggest and most modern in the country and East Africa, and will position Jigjiga as a major business hub.”
Equipped with modern facilities, the mall is expected to transform Jigjiga into a regional business hub, attracting both local and international investors, while also creating significant job opportunities.
The Taiwan Market, once a historic commercial center, was destroyed by a devastating fire that displaced hundreds of traders and caused extensive economic damage. Authorities stressed that the redevelopment project is not only about rebuilding infrastructure but also about restoring commerce, supporting communities, and strengthening investor confidence.
