Ethiopia, 20 September 2025 – Thousands of Jigjiga residents gathered in the streets on Friday to celebrate the completion of Abay Dam, one of Africa’s largest hydroelectric power projects.
The rally was held under the slogan: ‘Just as we succeeded with the Abay Dam, we will succeed in industry and energy use’, reflecting the people’s joy over the successful completion of the project.
The celebrations included traditional dances and entertainment shows performed along the city’s main streets.
Somali Regional State President Mustafe Muxumed Cumar described the dam as a historic step in Ethiopia’s development and economic progress.
“This project will significantly transform the lives of Ethiopians, especially the poor. It will boost the country’s economy by expanding energy production and bringing in much-needed foreign currency.”
“It will also strengthen Ethiopia’s role in the Horn of Africa and the wider region,” President Mustafe said.
Residents of Jigjiga emphasized that the project represents unity and cooperation among Ethiopia’s diverse communities.
Garaad Kulmiye Garaad Maxamed Dool stated: “The Abay River is our second independence after the liberation from colonialism. Today, Ethiopia has freed itself from loans, hunger, and dependency.”
Idman, a high school student, also shared her hopes: “I expect this project to bring great benefits and income to the country. It will enable electricity exports to neighbouring countries. We worked hard to reach this level,” she said.
The Abay Dam also known as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) was officially inaugurated on September 9, 2025, though Sudan and Egypt continue to express concerns about potential reductions in Nile River water flow.
The project is considered the cornerstone of Ethiopia’s ambition to grow its economy, increase exports, and strengthen agricultural production.
