Mogadishu, 24 August 2026 — Hormuud University has selected artificial intelligence as the theme for National Training Week 2026, with a six-day programme to help Somalis apply AI in education, business and employment.
The programme will run from Aug. 29 to Sept. 3 and include 24 training sessions led by experts in technology, education, healthcare, business and community development, the university said.
Mohamed Abdirahman, director of the Skills Department, said the programme was designed to give the public a basic understanding of AI and its practical applications.
“We have designed this programme so that the whole community can benefit, whether they are students, teachers, businesspeople or government employees,” he told Dawan Media on Monday.
The training will cover AI fundamentals, its use in education and business, and how graduates can use it to develop skills and prepare for the job market.

The programme will also include a Hackathon, in which teams will develop solutions to existing problems using skills gained during the training. Participants will be assessed on their solutions, potential social and economic impact and how effectively they present their ideas, Abdirahman said.
“AI is a new technology that is already part of our reality, and over the next 10 years society will increasingly use it. People need to prepare for it, learn it and use it,” he said.
AI should not be viewed as a replacement for people but as a tool that can make work easier, he added.
“AI will not replace human beings, but it will help make the tasks we perform and the way we work easier,” he said.
Participation is free and open to Somalis, although registration is required, the university said.
