Kenya, 7 July 2026 - Garissa County has signed an intergovernmental partnership with the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to upgrade Kismayu Road.
The deal was assigned at Garissa County headquarters with Governor Nathif Jama and Eng Luka Kimeli of Kenya National Highways Authority.
Governor Jama said Kismayu Road is a strategic road serving not only Garissa County but the entire North Eastern region.
He added that it is a vital transport and economic corridor.
Through the partnership, project implementers are expected to undertake various complementary works, including extension of the central median from its current endpoint to the access road leading to Garissa Police Station.
The partnership according to the officials, also covers beautification and landscaping to create an attractive and welcoming urban environment.

They are also set to install and commission street lighting system to enhance safety, security and the city's night-time vibrancy.
“Construction of Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) infrastructure, including pedestrian walkways and dedicated cycling lanes, to promote safe, accessible and sustainable mobility for all road users, shall also be implemented,” said Governor Jama.
Jama said the partnership reaffirms the unwavering commitment to delivering meaningful development that transforms lives, expands opportunities for locals, and leaves a legacy of progress and pride.
