GALKAYO, Somalia, 4 October 2026 Galkayo, the administrative center of Somalia’s Mudug region, has launched the first phase of a drainage project to address rainwater and flooding.
The city was officially recognized as a district 66 years ago but has continued to face drainage challenges, particularly during rainy seasons.
An agreement for the project was signed between the Puntland administration, Galkayo district authorities, the District Development Committee and TTN Construction, the Somali company headquartered in Garowe that will implement it.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by members of parliament, ministers, officials from the Mudug regional administration, Galkayo district and others.
The project represents the first phase of Galkayo’s wider drainage plan, which will be implemented in four phases at a total estimated cost of $20 million.

The Galkayo District Development Committee said the project requires wider community participation and cooperation among residents will be essential to its success.
Puntland’s Minister of Finance Mohamed Farah Mahmoud said the target could be achieved if residents collectively contribute to financing.
“If 200,000 people each contribute $100, that would amount to $20 million, which would be enough to cover the four phases of Galkayo’s drainage project,” Mahmoud said.
The project is expected to improve the city’s drainage system and rainwater management, provided funding and cooperation are secured to complete all four phases.
