Kenya, 21 July 2026 - Opposition political realignments gathered pace on Tuesday after Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua held fresh talks with businessman and Safina Party leader Jimi Wanjigi, signalling renewed efforts to build a united front against President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The closed-door meeting took place at Gachagua's Wamunyoro residence in Mathira Constituency, Nyeri County, marking the second time the two leaders have met there to discuss opposition strategy and coalition-building.
In a statement after the meeting, Gachagua described the discussions as productive, saying consultations with like-minded leaders would continue as the opposition seeks what it terms the "liberation" of the country.
"I had the benefit of a further enriching and informative consultation with businessman and political strategist Jimi Wanjigi at the Wamunyoro residence today," Gachagua said.
"The journey for the liberation of our country is a tough one and every opinion and advice is crucial. But we shall get there. It is a matter of when, not if. Consultations continue. God bless Kenya."
The latest meeting underscores growing coordination among opposition figures as they work to forge a formidable political alliance capable of challenging President Ruto's re-election bid.

Wanjigi, the leader of the Safina Party, has in recent months emerged as one of the key figures engaging with opposition leaders over the formation of a broad coalition ahead of the 2027 polls.
The consultations come amid heightened political activity across the country, with both the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition and opposition leaders stepping up mobilisation well ahead of the election cycle.
The Gachagua-Wanjigi talks are expected to fuel speculation over the shape of the emerging opposition alliance and the role each leader could play in the battle for State House in 2027.
