DJIBOUTI, September 25, 2026 Djibouti police have arrested five people suspected of producing and circulating counterfeit money after investigating a fake 5,000 Djiboutian franc note given to a woman selling khat.
The incident began on September 17, when a man bought two bundles of khat from a vendor near the livestock market. He paid with a counterfeit 5,000-franc note, collected his change and left. Minutes later, the vendor discovered that the note was fake.
Police said the description she provided helped them arrest the suspected customer the following day. Investigators from the Fourth District Police Station subsequently arrested four more people.

At the home of the person police identified as the main suspect, investigators seized an HP colour printer-scanner, cutting equipment and counterfeit notes in denominations of 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 Djiboutian francs.
According to case details published by the Djiboutian News Agency, the five suspects admitted to the allegations during separate questioning. They were brought before the public prosecutor and remanded to Gabode Civil Prison pending further legal proceedings.
