Kenya, 20 November 2025 - Panic has gripped the Shaletey neighbourhood in Wajir County as residents complain of persistent chilling explosions, unable to determine if they are exactly from terrorists or from military drills.
On Wednesday, there was an explosion with a suspicious bomb falling in the compound of a resident.
Though, there were no casualities in the 6:30am incident, but the earth-shaking boom send shivers across.
Fearing that the device could be a weapon, Mr Mohamed Noor together with other residents, urged authorities to check and thwart any terrorist attacks or erratic explosion from equipment and weapons used by soldiers during the military drills.
They also want military trainings done far away from their homes.
Mr Noor told Dawan Africa that a military camp just sits cheek-by-jowl with their homes and there is a constant dread as thunderous explosions from daily training exercises shake the neighbourhood—even deep into the night.
The noises, he said, have transformed bedtime into a torment for families, with children waking in tears.
“We hardly sleep,” Mr Noor said.
“The blasts come without warning. There was a very heavy smoke in the morning as a result of this explosion. The little ones scream at night whenever there are explosions.”
Mr Noor suggested that military in the area should monitor the heavy-weapons training hours and relocate it to open spaces far away from Shalatey so that the shockwaves cannot rattle homes and shatter nerves.
He has also called on political leaders and community at large to intervene and address the issue immediately.
