Somalia, 7 June 2026 – Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has extended an official invitation to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for a meeting to discuss Somalia’s electoral process and seek agreement on how the elections should proceed.
Farmaajo made the announcement during a joint press briefing in Mogadishu alongside former President Shariif Sheikh Ahmed. He emphasized the importance of direct dialogue among Somali leaders to resolve disputes without external interference.
“We are asking the President to sit with us. I am hosting, and the meeting will be at my home with the three former and current presidents so we can discuss the electoral process together,” Farmaajo said.
The meeting is scheduled to take place at Farmaajo’s residence in Mogadishu on Monday, June 8, at 11:30 a.m.

Farmaajo also highlighted that if Somali leaders work together, the involvement of foreign actors could be minimized. “External interference is not ideal. If the situation deteriorates, intervention may be necessary, but it can be avoided if we resolve our disputes internally,” he noted.
He further stressed that should President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud decline the invitation or not attend, it would not justify any foreign powers taking sides or intervening in the country’s political affairs.
The invitation comes amid ongoing debates and political disagreements surrounding Somalia’s election framework, as leaders continue to navigate the challenges of organizing a credible and inclusive electoral process.
