Kenya, June 17, 2026 - The Director of Public Prosecutions has charged a former Taita Taveta County official with fraudulently obtaining KSh 8.3 million in imprest payments for trips and activities that never took place.
Geffrey Kimonge Mbogo, the county’s former director of political affairs, appeared before the Voi Anti-Corruption Court to face charges of fraudulent acquisition of public property and deceiving his principal.
The court heard that between November 20, 2015 and December 16, 2016, Mbogo allegedly obtained KSh 8,303,021 from the Taita Taveta County Government for events he claimed were held in Dubai, Mombasa, Arusha, Nairobi and within Taita Taveta.
Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Evah Kanyuira told the court the accused knowingly deceived his employer by applying for multiple imprest warrants for activities that did not occur. Prosecutors said the funds were paid out based on false claims submitted by the former official.
Mbogo pleaded not guilty to both charges.
The court released him on a cash bail of KSh 1 million or an alternative bond of KSh 2 million.
The case will be mentioned on July 1, 2026 for pre-trial directions.
