Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-The European Union has enhanced its support for security initiatives in Somalia with a new funding allocation of €110 million under the European Peace Facility (EPF). This funding aims to support the transition of security responsibilities from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to the Somali National Army (SNA).
The EU's commitment includes €70 million to continue backing ATMIS, primarily covering troop allowances for African soldiers in Somalia. This addition builds on the previous support of €270 million provided from July 2021 through December 2023. Additionally, the SNA will receive €40 million aimed at equipping the force with non-lethal gear, supplementing the €50 million previously allocated under the EPF.
This financial aid is part of a larger EU strategy to promote peace and security in Somalia and the broader Horn of Africa, aligning with relevant UN Security Council Resolutions and the Somali Transition Plan. The support falls under a broader Assistance Measure worth €600 million covering 2022-2024, underscoring the EU's role as the primary supporter of ATMIS with nearly €2.7 billion contributed since 2007.
