MARMARSA, Ethiopia, September 26, 2026 Ethiopia’s Somali Region aims to collect 1 billion birr ($6.2 million) in property tax this year, Vice President Ibrahim Osman Farah said during a visit to Marmarsa in the Siti region.
Farah spoke as the town began registering properties for taxation, regional broadcaster SRTV reported. He said the revenue target covered both newly established and existing municipal administrations.
Marmarsa alone is expected to raise 209 million birr, or about $1.3 million, from property tax this year, Farah said.

Locally raised revenue currently covers 51% of the region’s spending needs, Farah said. The government aims to raise that share to 75% within three years.
SRTV said Marmarsa officials had been urged to make property registration and tax collection transparent and fair, and to explain to residents how the revenue would support local development.
