JIGJIGA, Ethiopia 20 October 2026 - Authorities in Ethiopia’s Somali Region have approved an annual work plan for a wheat value chain development project, including eight initiatives aimed at improving agricultural production, according to a statement from the regional agriculture bureau.
The project’s regional steering committee reviewed a report on the programme’s performance for 2018 E.C. (2025–2026) and approved the annual work plan for 2019 E.C. (2026–2027), the bureau said in a statement published on its social media.
Following discussions and recommendations, the committee unanimously approved the plan, which includes irrigation initiatives, the modernisation of agricultural equipment and other activities related to wheat production.
Guuleed Ahmed Ali, head of the regional agriculture bureau, said cooperation among relevant institutions was necessary because of the project’s contribution to developing wheat production.

The initiative forms part of wider efforts to strengthen Ethiopia’s wheat value chain. The federal Ministry of Agriculture says the Climate Resilient Wheat Value Chain Development (CREW) Project runs from 2024 to 2028 and covers districts in four regions, including the Somali Region.
The project aims to increase wheat production and productivity while improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. Its activities include improving agricultural practices and expanding access to mechanisation and advisory services.
The regional bureau said the approved annual plan would support cooperation among institutions involved in agricultural development and efforts to improve wheat production.
