Ethiopia, 30 May 2026 Ethiopia has registered 54,057,861 voters ahead of its seventh general election, the National Election Board (NEBE) said, confirming all preparations for Monday June 1, 2026, are complete.
According to Worldometer, Ethiopia’s total population is estimated at 138.9 million in 2026, meaning registered voters represent approximately 39% of the population.
Melatwork Hailu, chairman of NEBE, said the board has finalized the distribution of election materials and set up polling stations to ensure readiness on election day.
The board has allowed political parties airtime to present their policy proposals to voters for the first time. It has also granted permission for 169 civil society organizations to provide voter education, and 55 local civil society groups to observe the election.

International observers are participating, with 59 representatives from the African Union and 26 from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) confirmed to monitor the election.
Media access has been approved for 68 outlets, including 56 local and 12 foreign organizations.
A complaints committee has been established to handle any electoral grievances, the board said, while stressing that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure a transparent and well-managed election.
