Ethiopia, 5 December 2025 - Ethiopia renewed its call for strengthening multilateralism and reforming the United Nations system to reflect the rapidly shifting global balance of power.
The remarks came during the “Ethiopia Month” celebration held in the Africa Village in Koreftu, attended by Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos along with diplomats and senior officials.
Timotheos said this year’s celebration carries special significance as it coincides with the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, an organization in which Ethiopia was a founding member and has historically contributed to upholding its core principles.
He underscored that the United Nations will remain a central and indispensable institution—provided it is equipped with the mandate and resources needed to effectively coordinate international efforts to address shared global challenges, from conflicts and climate change to sustainable development.
The minister noted that Africa today holds greater influence within the international system due to its demographic weight, expanding economic potential, and growing alignment among its member states on strategic issues.

He affirmed that the continent will continue to demand reforms that make the global order more equitable and representative, including securing a stronger African voice within the UN Security Council and other multilateral institutions.
African states, he stressed, have become key actors in peacekeeping, mediation, preventive diplomacy, and climate action, adding that recognition of this role must be reflected in the structure of the international order.
Commenting on the ‘Ethiopia Month’, the minister emphasized the importance of cultural diplomacy as a bridge for deepening understanding between peoples and promoting cooperation based on mutual respect.
