Ethiopia, 6 November 2025 — The Government Communication Office of Ethiopia’s Afar Region has announced that forces affiliated with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) carried out an armed attack on six villages in the region’s Zone 2, in a clear violation of the Pretoria peace agreement.
The statement said that the attackers used mortar shells and artillery weapons during the assault, resulting in civilian casualties, despite mediation efforts by Afar elders to stop the violence.
The regional government described the incident as a serious breach of the peace accord signed between the federal government and the Tigray Front, stressing that it would take “appropriate defensive measures” to protect its citizens and territory from further attacks. It also urged the international community to intervene urgently to halt these violations.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia’s Chief of Defense Staff, Field Marshal Berhanu Jula, sharply criticized the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, accusing it of continuing to arm its forces and form external alliances that risk reigniting the war in the north.
He affirmed that the Ethiopian National Defense Force “will not allow any attempt to destabilize the country or undermine national security.”
