CAIRO (Dawan Africa) – Egypt’s national football team defeated Ethiopia 2–0 on Friday at Cairo International Stadium in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match.
Liverpool star Mohamed Salah opened the scoring with a penalty in the 41st minute, followed by Omar Marmoush converting a second penalty during first-half stoppage time.
The victory moves Egypt to the top of Group A, while Ethiopia remains just one spot above Djibouti at the bottom, trailing by 13 points.
The win strengthens Egypt’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 tournament. The match was played amid political tensions between Cairo and Addis Ababa over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). Despite this, Egypt controlled the game and asserted dominance, leaving Ethiopia under pressure to recover in upcoming fixtures.
