Kenya, July 22, 2026 - The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a Senior Principal Magistrate attached to Kangema Law Courts and a Principal Probation Officer over corruption allegations.
In a statement on Wednesday, the commission said that the two magistrates were arrested on Tuesday at a restaurant within Kangema township following a coordinated operation.
The commission said that the arrest followed a complaint lodged by a businessman from Murang'a County, who claimed that he had been convicted on July 2, 2026, in a criminal case involving obtaining money by false pretences and was due to be sentenced on July 22.
Preliminary investigations established that the probation officer allegedly approached the complainant, claiming to be acting on behalf of the magistrate, and demanded KSh170,000.
In return, he allegedly promised that the money would secure a favourable probation report, resulting in a non-custodial sentence instead of imprisonment.
“EACC mounted an operation that culminated in the arrest of the two suspects while receiving KSh150,000 from the complainant,” EACC stated.
“ They are currently in custody at the Nyeri Central Police Station and will be processed this morning at the EACC Central Regional Office. EACC reiterates its commitment to tackling bribery at service delivery points and enhancing the quality of public services for all citizens,” it added.
The case comes a day after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) also apprehended a Nairobi-based lawyer after he allegedly attempted to falsely claim ownership of a parcel of land that belonged to another individual.
The detectives said on Tuesday that the complainant purchased the land in 2025 and had been in possession of the property when she received court documents in November 2023 indicating that the lawyer was claiming ownership of the same land.
Following investigations, the DCI forwarded their findings to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), who then approved charges for allegedly making a false document.
The lawyer was arrested by detectives from the DCI Headquarters' Land Fraud Investigations Unit (LFIU) in Nairobi and is awaiting arraignment in court.
