Djibouti(Mogadishu24)-The President of the Republic of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guelleh, received a delegation led by the leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, on Sunday afternoon ahead of the planned dialogue with the President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of Sudan, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan.
“General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo’s visit to Djibouti is connected to President Guelleh’s mediation efforts, as the current President of IGAD, between the two primary parties engaged in the Sudanese conflicts,” stated the Djiboutian Presidency.
During the meeting, President Guelleh and Hamdan discussed the current situation in Sudan and explored lasting solutions to the conflicts between the two warring forces.
The discussions primarily focused on the practical arrangements for overseeing the meeting, a precursor to resolving the crisis in Sudan, as agreed upon during the last IGAD summit between General Abdel Fattah Al Burhan and General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
Since mid-April 2023, the Sudanese Army and Rapid Support Forces have been involved in a conflict that has claimed over 12,000 lives and displaced more than 6 million, according to the United Nations.
The International Organization for Migration reported that over 6.3 million Sudanese have fled their homes to escape fighting between the opposing sides since mid-April.
The report noted that 4,955,538 people have been displaced in 5,312 places across all regions of Sudan, as well as causing widespread violations of human rights.
The International Organization for Migration also indicated that since the outbreak of war, 1,373,223 people have fled to neighbouring countries, including Chad, South Sudan, and Egypt.
Djibouti has played a significant role in contributing to regional peace and stability.
Earlier this week, the Djibouti Government facilitated talks between Somalia and Somaliland, which ended in an agreement on key points, including the commitment by both parties to resuming roadmap talks, focusing on addressing critical issues to achieve a lasting solution.
Somalia and Somaliland have agreed on the roadmap process and will establish a technical committee tasked with facilitating discussions within a 30-day timeframe.
