DJIBOUTI, 26 September 2026 Djiboutian official Yassin Souleiman Hassan has been elected vice president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), according to the Djiboutian News Agency.
The election took place on Saturday during FIDE's General Assembly in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, where the organisation formed its new leadership for the coming term.
Yassin Souleiman currently heads the Djibouti Chess Federation and FIDE Zone 4.4. His election places him among officials responsible for shaping future policies and plans of international chess.
FIDE is the world governing body for chess and represents more than 200 national federations.
Djibouti's National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSD) described the election as a major achievement and a source of pride.

"This election is a source of immense pride for the Republic of Djibouti," the committee said in a statement.
The CNOSD praised Yassin Souleiman's sustained commitment and work to develop chess nationally and internationally, describing his election as recognition of the capabilities of Djiboutian sports officials.
The election is also seen as strengthening Djibouti's presence in international sports decision-making bodies as the country seeks to expand its influence on the global stage.
Founded in Paris in 1924, FIDE is headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The organisation oversees major international chess competitions, including the World Chess Championship and the Chess Olympiad.
