DJIBOUTI, 1 October 2026 — The National Office for Water and Sanitation of Djibouti (ONEAD) has stepped up operations to clean drainage systems and canals in the capital as the country prepares for heavy rainfall associated with the effects of El Niño.
ONEAD teams on Wednesday cleaned the Guelleh Batal canal, removing sediment, waste and other debris that had accumulated along the waterway to ensure rainwater can flow freely during heavy rainfall.
The agency said it has deployed personnel and equipment for the operations, while its teams are also clearing drainage channels blocked by vegetation and various types of waste, including Prosopis trees.

ONEAD urged residents to dispose of waste responsibly and avoid dumping it in canals and drainage channels, which are essential for carrying away rainwater.
The operations are part of preventive measures aimed at preparing for heavy rainfall and reducing the risk of flooding.
