NEW YORK, 28 September 2026 Djibouti called for more international aid to support people fleeing Yemen, saying the number arriving in the country could reach 10,000, according to a United Nations estimate cited by Foreign Minister Abdoulkader Houssein Omar.
Speaking at the U.N. General Assembly on Saturday, Omar said recent arrivals were putting pressure on host communities in the Obock region and on capacity at the Markazi reception centre.
“Djibouti cannot meet the growing needs for shelter, food and essential services alone,” he said, urging the international community to increase its support. As of September 16, 2,776 arrivals had been recorded in Obock, according to the U.N. Population Fund. The figure of 10,000 is a projection rather than a count of people who have already arrived.
