OBOCK, Djibouti, 18 October 2026 — Djibouti's National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) has conducted a field visit to Obock following a deadly shipwreck off the coast that claimed the lives of numerous migrants, including women and children.
The delegation, led by Commission President Ali Soubaneh Atteyeh, visited the Markazi camp, which hosts Yemeni refugees, before travelling to the site of the recent maritime tragedy, Djibouti News Agency reported on Sunday.
At Markazi, the delegation examined refugee reception and assistance conditions, focusing on respect for fundamental rights, human dignity and protection needs among displaced populations.
At the shipwreck site, Atteyeh expressed solidarity with bereaved families, survivors and others affected by the tragedy.

He also commended the response efforts of Djiboutian authorities, rescue services, the Djibouti Red Crescent, United Nations agencies — including the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) — and humanitarian partners.
The commission called for stronger coordination between government institutions, international organisations and humanitarian actors to improve prevention, emergency assistance and protection for migrants and refugees.
The visit underscores the continuing humanitarian challenges facing vulnerable people moving along migration routes and the need to safeguard their rights and dignity.
