Djibouti (Dawan Africa) – President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti emphasized the nation's resilience in addressing global challenges on Friday, speaking during the national celebrations of Djibouti's 48th Independence Day. The President highlighted pressing global issues such as climate change, migration, insecurity, and economic uncertainty.
"Everywhere, countries and peoples are facing major challenges," Guelleh stated, recognizing the potential disruptions these crises may cause to global development. Despite these challenges, he stressed that Djibouti’s ability to adapt and its inherent resilience were key to overcoming these obstacles. "We must confront this context of uncertainty and protect our social and economic model," he added.
A significant portion of his speech focused on the need for economic innovation and diversification. Guelleh urged the country to strengthen its economy by branching out into new sectors, ensuring its future in an unpredictable global market. "The hardships of the moment and the obstacles we face must not shake the resilience of our people," he asserted.
At the core of the President's message was a reaffirmation of Djibouti’s commitment to sovereignty. "We will not cease to subscribe to the ethics of full and complete sovereignty," Guelleh declared, emphasizing that Djibouti would maintain its autonomy in the face of global volatility.
Guelleh also honored the nation’s heroes and martyrs who fought for independence and praised the law enforcement and security forces for their role in maintaining national unity. He called on all Djiboutians to work together for the country's continued stability and progress.
On the international stage, Guelleh expressed solidarity with nations facing crises, particularly Sudan and Palestine. He condemned the violence in Gaza, stating, "We strongly denounce the genocidal targets in Gaza," and advocated for a permanent solution based on the two-state solution outlined in UN Resolution 181.
In his concluding remarks, President Guelleh reaffirmed Djibouti’s resolve to overcome global challenges through resilience, innovation, and unity. Despite these challenges, he emphasized that Djibouti’s commitment to sovereignty and development remains steadfast.
