Djibouti, 7 September 2026 Djibouti’s food safety authorities have uncovered hygiene, refrigeration and food storage violations during inspections of businesses across the capital, according to the Djiboutian News Agency (ADI).Teams from the National Food Analysis Laboratory (LANAA) carried out the inspections on Sunday, visiting shops, restaurants and warehouses in several neighborhoods of Djibouti City.
The inspections focused on product expiration dates, storage and refrigeration conditions, and the integrity of food packaging for products offered for sale.
LANAA said inspectors found raw chicken stored in the same freezers as beverages at some establishments, a practice that could increase the risk of contamination and the spread of harmful bacteria between products.
Inspectors also documented signs of breaks in the cold chain, thawed food products, traces of blood and poor hygiene conditions in some storage areas and equipment.

The agency urged businesses to separate raw food from other products, maintain proper refrigeration temperatures and regularly clean food storage facilities and equipment.
LANAA said samples may be taken from suspected products and sent for laboratory testing to determine whether they comply with food safety standards.
The inspections are part of efforts to reduce health risks associated with food products that fail to meet safety requirements. LANAA said ensuring food safety is a shared responsibility among government authorities, importers, traders, restaurants and consumers.
