Djibouti, October 8, 2025 – Djibouti is hosting this year's East African Standby Forces (EASF) maritime exercise, focusing on strengthening security cooperation and addressing maritime threats in the region.
The exercise dubbed ‘Bahari Salama' or Safe Sea commenced on Tuesday and is being led by the Chief of Staff of the Djiboutian Armed Forces, General Zakariye Sheikh Ibrahim. Senior military officials from 10 African countries are among over 100 participants attending.
The exercise aims to enhance maritime security, combat piracy, and tackle illegal fishing. Its broader objective is to strengthen cooperation among East African countries to protect the region’s waters.
Colonel Wacays Omar Boqore, Head of the Djiboutian Coast Guard, expressed gratitude in hosting the important exercise, emphasizing that it reflects Djibouti’s commitment to regional security and stability.
“This exercise symbolizes an essential step in strengthening the cooperation among East African nations and our collective capacity to secure maritime borders,” said Colonel Boqore.
The exercise, expected to run until 17th October; will provide participants with an opportunity to exchange ideas on maritime security.
Djibouti’s role in hosting the event highlights its strategic importance in the Horn of Africa and its commitment to working with neighboring countries to address shared security challenges.
