Djibouti (Dawan Africa) – The Government of Djibouti and the European Union held a meeting to review the progress of their development cooperation through the NDICI - Global Europe (2021-2027) program on 8th July, the EU's primary tool for foreign policy actions.
The meeting took place in Djibouti and was co-chaired by a representative from the Djibouti Ministry of Economy and Finance and EU Ambassador to Djibouti, Denisa-Elena Ionete. Also in attendance were government officials, representatives from EU member states, and partners involved in ongoing projects within the country.
According to the Djibouti News Agency, discussions focused on the progress of current projects, the challenges faced, and how the cooperation aligns with the National Development Plan 2025-2030. Ambassador Ionete emphasized the EU's efforts to secure increased public funding for key reforms in the country.
The meeting included two parts: a strategic session between EU representatives and the Djibouti government, and a technical session with project partners to review contracts, share best practices, and improve coordination among stakeholders.
Both parties confirmed their commitment to strengthening the effectiveness, transparency, and accountability of ongoing projects. Planning for the next phase of cooperation, which will span from 2028 to 2034, is already underway.
The NDICI - Global Europe program, launched in 2021, combines several previous initiatives with a budget of €79.5 billion. This program serves as the foundation for the Global Gateway initiative, which seeks to improve global connectivity, with particular emphasis on countries like Djibouti. Focus areas include investments in digital infrastructure, transportation, and sustainable energy projects currently underway in Djibouti.
