Italy, August 12 , 2026 - Djed Spence is set to leave Tottenham Hotspur for Inter Milan after the two clubs reached a verbal agreement over the transfer of the England international.
The breakthrough was confirmed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who reported that Inter have reached an agreement with Tottenham for Spence following negotiations over a deal worth more than €30 million. The development brings an end to a transfer saga that had intensified over the past several weeks.
Spence is now expected to complete his move to the Italian giants, with the remaining formalities involving the final documentation and completion of the transfer.
Inter had identified Spence as one of their preferred targets to strengthen the right wing-back position following Denzel Dumfries' departure to Real Madrid.
The Nerazzurri had been monitoring the Tottenham defender for weeks, but the initial valuation represented an obstacle.
Earlier reports indicated that Inter considered Tottenham's asking price too high, with Spurs understood to be looking for a fee around the €35 million mark while Inter initially wanted to operate closer to €30 million. The two clubs have now found a compromise, with the agreement understood to be worth more than €30 million.
The agreement is therefore a significant victory for both sides.
Tottenham have secured a substantial fee for a player they signed from Middlesbrough in 2022, while Inter have managed to land one of their priority targets without having to meet the higher valuation initially sought by Spurs.
The player's position was also important in getting the transfer over the line.
Spence has been open to joining Inter and reportedly gave positive indications about a move to Serie A.
The 26-year-old's previous experience in Italy could also help him settle quickly. He spent part of the 2023/24 season on loan at Genoa, making 16 Serie A appearances.
His familiarity with Italian football makes the move particularly logical.
Inter are not simply signing an English full-back based on his Premier League and international reputation. They are acquiring a player who has already experienced Serie A and understands the tactical demands of Italian football.
From Tottenham uncertainty to England international#
Spence's journey to Inter is particularly interesting given how uncertain his Tottenham future once appeared.
Tottenham signed him from Middlesbrough in July 2022 after his outstanding loan spell at Nottingham Forest helped establish him as one of the Championship's most exciting young full-backs.
However, his first period at Spurs was difficult.
Under Antonio Conte, Spence struggled for regular opportunities and later admitted that the situation affected his confidence. He subsequently spent loan spells away from Tottenham, including periods at Rennes, Leeds United and Genoa.
Eventually, however, his fortunes changed.
Spence established himself as a more important member of Tottenham's squad and demonstrated his ability to operate on both sides of the defence.

That versatility became one of his biggest strengths.
The biggest boost to Spence's reputation came during the 2026 World Cup.
The Tottenham full-back was selected by England manager Thomas Tuchel for the tournament and emerged as one of the players to significantly increase his profile on the international stage.
His performances attracted attention from several clubs, but Inter's interest became increasingly serious.
Tottenham had also recently rewarded Spence with a new contract, demonstrating that the club valued his development. His emergence as an England international subsequently strengthened Spurs' negotiating position.
Why Inter wanted Spence#
Spence's profile fits Inter's tactical requirements particularly well.
The Italian club frequently relies on wing-backs to provide width and attacking support while also contributing defensively.
Spence possesses the pace required to operate in that role and is capable of defending one-on-one situations.
He can also play as a conventional right-back, giving Inter tactical flexibility.
Most importantly, his arrival provides a potential replacement for Dumfries, who left for Real Madrid.
Inter had been searching for a player capable of filling that void, and Spence ultimately emerged as their preferred solution.
For Tottenham, the agreement represents a significant financial return.
Spurs paid a reported £20 million to sign Spence from Middlesbrough in 2022. His transfer to Inter for more than €30 million means Tottenham will now receive a substantial fee for a player who spent much of his early Spurs career struggling for consistent first-team football.
It also allows the club to reshape its squad.
Spence's departure follows the arrival of experienced left-back Andy Robertson, while Pedro Porro remains an important option on the right. Tottenham have also been extremely active in the transfer market this summer.
