DCI Fires Back at Gachagua Over Crime Allegations

Kenya, 11 August 2026 - The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has dismissed allegations by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua that the agency is involved in criminal activities, challenging him and other critics to provide evidence to support their claims.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, DCI Director Mohamed Amin said the allegations were “baseless and unsubstantiated”, accusing those advancing them of seeking to undermine public confidence in law enforcement.

“The DCI categorically states that it does not sanction, facilitate, conceal or participate in criminal conduct of any kind, regardless of the identity or status of any person involved,” the statement said.

The agency said it remains mandated to investigate serious and complex crimes, gather evidence and present cases to prosecutorial and judicial authorities in accordance with the Constitution and the law.

The statement came in response to allegations touching on cases involving alleged abductions, disappearances, deaths, police shootings and attacks against journalists.

The DCI said where such cases fall within its mandate, investigations are conducted based on available evidence and that neither political affiliation nor public prominence influences the process.

The agency cited the murder of Reverend Julius Ndumia Ngari of the PCEA Tabuga Church in Nakuru North Sub-County on May 3, 2026, as one of the cases in which it has made significant progress.

Two suspects, Felix Odinga Okumu and Berrylly Nafua Ateryo, have been arrested and arraigned before the Nakuru Law Courts, according to the DCI.

Four armed suspects were also fatally shot during an intelligence-led operation along the Eldoret-Kiplombe-Soy Road after they engaged detectives in a gunfight.


The DCI said forensic analysis and other evidence linked the gang to the robbery with violence incident in which the PCEA reverend was killed, as well as possible involvement in other criminal activities in the region.

The agency also said it had made “tremendous progress” in investigations into the fatal shooting of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso.

The DCI said some suspects had been arrested while others were still being pursued and would be brought to court once apprehended.

In another case, detectives in Cheptais arrested  Oscar Koech Sakong, one of the suspects linked to the killing of 61-year-old businessman **Nathan Masai Wasama.

Wasama was shot dead at his shop at Tuikut Trading Centre, Sasur Location, Cheptais Sub-County, on August 8.

The suspect has been escorted to Sirisia Police Station as detectives pursue further leads to establish the motive and arrest other suspects.

The DCI said it had deployed all available investigative resources to ensure those responsible for the crimes face justice.

The agency strongly rejected suggestions that its investigations were being undertaken to serve political interests.

“The DCI therefore rejects any suggestion that its investigations are undertaken to serve partisan political interests, noting that investigative outcomes and subsequent decisions have always been guided by evidence and the law, not by political considerations,” it said.

It also criticised what it termed the use of deaths of public figures and private citizens to advance political narratives, saying such actions take advantage of grieving families.

The DCI said it would not conduct investigations through the media or disclose sensitive operational information that could compromise ongoing inquiries.

Where investigations establish criminal culpability, suspects will be prosecuted and presented before the appropriate authorities, it said.

The agency further said it would continue working with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Judiciary and other constitutional institutions to ensure accountability and respect for the rule of law.

The DCI invited members of the public, including Mr Gachagua, who have information concerning alleged criminal activity to submit it through official investigative channels.

“Credible information will be assessed and acted upon in accordance with the law,” the agency said.
