Kenya, 27 November 2025 - Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has called for the immediate arrest of former Attorney General Justin Muturi, following a heated confrontation at the Siakago Social Hall polling station during Thursday’s by-election.
In a strongly worded statement issued on November 27, Cherargei condemned Muturi’s actions, alleging that the former AG physically mishandled a voter, an incident he says amounts to both assault and an election offence.
“Justin Muturi should be arrested without delay for aggravated assault and interfering with the electoral process,” the senator declared, accusing him of disrupting the voting environment at Siakago.
Cherargei went further, framing the incident as evidence of panic within the United Opposition, which is backing Newton Kariuki in the Mbeere North by-election. According to him, the scuffle reflects “desperation” from a camp he believes is headed for defeat.
“These are early signs that their divided candidate is trailing badly in the Mbeere North race,” he claimed.
The senator also urged the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) to strip Muturi of his status as an advocate, arguing that his behaviour was unbecoming of a senior legal professional who has previously served as Attorney General, National Assembly Speaker, and a long-time legislator.

“It’s disgraceful that someone with such a legal and political background can engage in this kind of conduct. The LSK should remove him from the roll of advocates immediately,” Cherargei said, adding that the incident “vindicates” the President’s earlier decision to dismiss Muturi from the Cabinet.
The altercation unfolded after Muturi confronted Chinga MCA Kiruga Thuku, who entered the polling centre wearing United Democratic Alliance (UDA) attire while serving as an observer for UDA candidate Leonard Wamauthende, an action prohibited under election rules.
Witnesses say Muturi, accompanied by supporters, approached the MCA and forced him out of the polling station, claiming he was upholding the law after the presiding officer allegedly failed to act on his complaint.
The situation escalated when a voter questioned Muturi’s approach, sparking a verbal exchange. Video clips circulating online appear to show Muturi grabbing the voter by the collar before allies stepped in to defuse the confrontation. The voter was briefly restrained and later let go.
Muturi has defended his actions, maintaining that he was enforcing electoral regulations after officials on the ground failed to intervene. The incident has since triggered political backlash, legal questions, and calls for disciplinary action setting the stage for a wider confrontation beyond the polling station itself.
