UK , August 30 2026 - Chelsea welcome Brighton & Hove Albion to Stamford Bridge on Sunday in one of the most intriguing fixtures of the second Premier League weekend, with Xabi Alonso preparing to take charge of his first league match in front of the home supporters.
The Blues arrive with confidence after opening the campaign with a 3-2 victory over Fulham, followed by a 2-0 Carabao Cup win against Luton Town. Alonso has therefore won his first two competitive matches in charge, but Brighton represent a significantly tougher examination.
Brighton, meanwhile, announced themselves emphatically on the opening weekend. Fabian Hürzeler's side demolished Aston Villa 4-0, scoring all four goals inside the opening 31 minutes. They subsequently defeated Tromsø 4-0 to reach the Conference League league phase, meaning they have scored eight goals without conceding across their last two matches.
Alonso will be encouraged by the early signs from his attacking trio. João Pedro, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer all impressed against Fulham, with João Pedro scoring after just 31 seconds and Rogers and Palmer also finding the net.
However, Chelsea's defensive stability remains a concern. Robert Sánchez's position is under scrutiny following his inconsistent performance against Fulham, while Chelsea have now agreed a deal to sign World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez from Aston Villa. Martínez is not expected to be available for this fixture.
Moisés Caicedo is also a fitness doubt, while Jordan Henderson and Marco Palestra remain unavailable. Wesley Fofana is available again after suspension.

Brighton will arrive believing they can hurt Chelsea.
The Seagulls have become something of a bogey side for the Blues, winning their last four meetings in all competitions. Overall, Chelsea still lead the historical head-to-head with 16 victories from 27 meetings, but Brighton's recent dominance has completely changed the dynamic.
Hürzeler also has attacking concerns of his own, with Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh among the absentees, while Jack Hinshelwood and Georginio Rutter are doubts.
This could ultimately come down to whether Chelsea can control Brighton's aggressive pressing and quick transitions.
Alonso wants his team to dominate possession and attack with positional flexibility, while Brighton have demonstrated that they can punish defensive mistakes ruthlessly.
