Kenya, 3 April 2026 - OpenAI has announced that its AI assistant, ChatGPT, is now available on Apple CarPlay, which will allow users to interact with the AI assistant through voice while driving.
Users should ensure that their iPhones are running on iOS 2.4 or later, have the latest version of the ChatGPT app, and that their vehicles are compatible with Apple CarPlay, to access the feature.
To use the feature, users need to connect their iPhone to their car, open ChatGPT on Apple CarPlay, and begin interacting with the assistant through voice commands.
“Only use your mobile device when allowed by law and when conditions permit safe use. Set up the app before driving, rely on hands-free, voice-first features whenever possible, and avoid interacting with your device while the vehicle is in motion,” OpenAI’s statement read.
The system allows drivers to start new chats, resume previous conversations, or continue discussions within existing projects through voice prompts.
The tech company has, however, noted that ChatGPT in CarPlay cannot access maps, vehicle information, or live location.
The AI assistant cannot control the car or affect other apps such as maps or messaging apps, according to OpenAI.
“Audio input and output depend on your car’s microphones, speakers, and echo cancellation. If the experience is unreliable, try again in a different car (if available) to confirm whether it is car-specific,” OpenAI said.

Since its launch in late 2022, ChatGPT has experienced rapid global adoption, becoming one of the most widely used artificial intelligence tools.
As of early 202, ChatGPT has approximately 900 million active users weekly globally, and 5.7 billion visits monthly, a number that is still increasing.
In January this year, OpenAI announced a new health-centred feature, “ChatGPT Health,” which allows users to access health and medical-related conversations.
The feature allows users to connect their medical records and wellness apps to ChatGPT, to ensure that the conversations are tailored to their own health information.
It also explains test results, helps individuals prepare for a doctor’s visit, advises on diet and workouts, and compares insurance plans.
