Kenya, April 25, 2026- Manchester United’s midfield rebuild could take a significant step this summer, with fresh reports revealing that Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba remains keen on a move to Old Trafford, almost a year after personal terms were first agreed.
The situation is not new, but it has re-emerged with greater clarity and momentum. Back in the summer of 2025, United had already reached a verbal agreement on personal terms with the Cameroonian international. At the time, the deal appeared close, with the player fully open to the move. However, Brighton & Hove Albion refused to sell, effectively shutting down negotiations despite the player’s willingness.
Now, nearly a year later, the same agreement is reportedly still valid, and crucially, Baleba’s stance has not changed.
Baleba’s potential switch to Manchester United has been one of those transfers that never truly disappeared. Even after the initial deal collapsed, United continued to monitor the midfielder closely.
The 22-year-old, who joined Brighton from Lille in 2023, has developed into a powerful, all-action midfielder known for his ball-winning ability, stamina, and versatility. Cameroon national football team international Baleba is seen as a modern midfielder capable of both defensive stability and progressive play, qualities United have been lacking in recent seasons.
Despite a somewhat inconsistent campaign, United’s recruitment team still values his profile highly, particularly as they look to refresh an aging midfield.
Manchester United’s interest in Baleba is rooted in a broader midfield overhaul. With uncertainty surrounding experienced players like Casemiro and inconsistent performances from others, the club is actively seeking younger, dynamic options.
Baleba fits that profile perfectly. He offers:
Reports suggest United could sign more than one midfielder this summer, meaning Baleba is not necessarily the only target, but remains a serious option.
While Baleba’s desire is clear, the final decision now rests with Manchester United.
The club is currently evaluating multiple midfield targets, including higher-profile or more established options. Baleba is believed to be among several names on a shortlist, meaning United must decide whether to:
This internal decision-making process will be influenced by several factors, including budget, managerial direction, and squad planning.

Interestingly, Baleba may now represent better value than before. Previously valued at over £75–100 million, his price is now expected to drop closer to the £50 million range, making him a more financially attractive option.
One of the biggest uncertainties remains Brighton’s position.
The club has built a reputation for being tough negotiators, often refusing to sell unless their valuation is fully met. This was evident last summer when they blocked Baleba’s move despite strong interest and an agreement with the player.
However, circumstances may now be different:
Still, any deal will depend on whether Brighton are willing to engage, and at what price.
Several factors suggest this summer could be the right moment for the transfer to finally happen.
Manchester United are pushing for Champions League qualification, which would significantly boost their appeal to top players. At the same time, Baleba remains eager to make the step up to a club competing at the highest level.
Unlike last year, the deal now appears more aligned on multiple fronts: player desire, club need, and potential affordability.
What remains is the final push.
If United decides to proceed, this could quickly become one of the most straightforward deals of the summer window. If not, Baleba may once again find himself waiting, still ready, still willing, but dependent on a decision that lies entirely outside his control.
One thing is clear: this is no longer speculation. It is a transfer story that is very real, and very close to being resolved.
