Kenya, July 1 , 2026 - A cargo train caught fire at Masimba in Makindu, Makueni County, triggering an emergency response from firefighters and security agencies. No injuries or fatalities had been reported by the time of publication.
The freight train, whose cargo had not been officially disclosed, developed a fire while passing through the Masimba area, prompting authorities to secure the scene as emergency teams worked to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading.
Witnesses reported seeing thick smoke billowing from sections of the train, attracting crowds of residents before police moved in to cordon off the area. Firefighters responded swiftly and managed to bring the fire under control, preventing what could have been a more serious incident.
Authorities confirmed that there were no casualties, with all crew members reported safe. The cause of the fire had not been immediately established, and investigations were underway to determine whether it resulted from a mechanical fault, electrical failure, or another factor.
The incident temporarily disrupted railway operations along the route as emergency personnel assessed the extent of the damage and worked to clear the affected section of the line. Kenya Railways was expected to issue a detailed statement after completing preliminary investigations.
The latest incident comes less than two years after another cargo train derailed in Kibwezi, Makueni County, spilling highly flammable fuel but causing no injuries. In that September 2024 incident, authorities urged residents to keep away from the scene because of the risk of explosion while recovery operations were undertaken.
More from Kenya
Kenya Railways has in recent years stepped up maintenance and safety inspections across its freight and passenger network as cargo volumes continue to increase, particularly along the Nairobi–Mombasa transport corridor.
Authorities have urged members of the public to avoid approaching railway incidents, warning that cargo trains may be carrying hazardous or highly combustible materials that pose significant safety risks. Investigations into the fire are expected to establish the exact cause and determine whether additional safety measures are required to prevent similar occurrences.
