Germany, September 01, 2026 - Borussia Dortmund have reached an agreement with Arsenal to sign Ethan Nwaneri on a season-long loan, giving the highly rated England Under-21 international another opportunity to develop through regular first-team football.
The move comes after Dortmund made a late approach for the 19-year-old as the transfer window approached its deadline. Earlier reports from BBC Sport confirmed that Dortmund had formally approached Arsenal over a loan and that negotiations were underway between the two clubs. Arsenal were actively considering loan proposals after deciding that a temporary move would be preferable to selling Nwaneri permanently.
Nwaneri's future has been a major talking point throughout the summer. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has made it clear that he wants the youngster to remain part of the club's long-term plans, but competition for attacking positions has made regular Premier League football difficult to guarantee.
Arsenal's squad has become increasingly crowded in the attacking and creative areas following the arrivals of players including Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke. BBC Sport reported earlier this month that the club believed Nwaneri would benefit from playing regular senior football elsewhere rather than spending another season with limited opportunities.
The decision also follows Nwaneri's previous loan experience. He spent the second half of the 2025/26 campaign at Marseille, where he was initially expected to gain valuable first-team experience. He made nine Ligue 1 appearances and scored twice during that spell, although his playing time became more limited after a managerial change.
Dortmund could now provide a very different environment.
The German club has a long-standing reputation for developing young players and giving them opportunities at the highest level. Nwaneri's technical ability, versatility and experience in European football make him an attractive addition to their squad.

Reports indicate that Dortmund will cover Nwaneri's salary in full during the loan, although the financial details beyond that remain unclear.
Importantly, this is understood to be a loan rather than a permanent transfer. Arsenal remain committed to Nwaneri's long-term future, with the teenager having signed a new contract running until 2030.
For Nwaneri, the move represents a chance to turn enormous potential into consistent senior football. For Arsenal, it offers an opportunity for one of their brightest academy graduates to develop away from the pressure of competing for minutes at the Emirates.
Dortmund's move could therefore be less about losing Nwaneri and more about Arsenal accelerating his development.
