Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-The Benadir Regional Court issued an arrest warrant on Wednesday for Jubaland State President Ahmed Mohamed Islam "Madobe," accusing him of treason.
The court’s decision followed a letter submitted by the Supreme Court of Somalia on November 26, which included a formal case file against the Jubaland leader.
The court instructed Benadir’s Chief of Police, Mahdi Omar Mumin, to carry out the arrest. The details of the treason charges have not been disclosed publicly.
This development comes just a day after Ahmed Madobe was re-elected as Jubaland State President for a third term, defying calls from the Federal Government of Somalia and international partners to suspend the electoral process and return to the National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting in Mogadishu.
The Federal Government rejected the election and Madobe’s presidency, labeling the process illegitimate.
The government has been advocating for a one-person, one-vote electoral model to unify Somalia's electoral process, a move opposed by Jubaland and Puntland States.
The escalating dispute between the federal government and Jubaland underscores the ongoing political tensions that have drawn criticism from international partners who have called for constructive dialogue to resolve the differences.
President Ahmed Madobe has not yet responded to the arrest warrant, and it remains unclear how this will affect the already strained relations between the Federal Government of Somalia and Jubaland State.
