MOGADISHU, Somalia, 29 September 2026 The Banaadir regional administration said on Monday it was stepping up the registration and monitoring of wells and water companies in Mogadishu, as authorities issue certificates to facilities that meet registration requirements.
Mahad Abdi Farah, head of water resources for Banaadir, said registration would enable authorities to collect information on wells and water facilities, including their locations and GPS coordinates, allowing them to be mapped using a GIS system.
Farah was speaking at an event where the administration presented registration certificates to some water companies and wells.
He said water from registered wells and facilities would be tested to assess its quality, including its physical, chemical and biological characteristics.
"There are hundreds of companies and wells in Mogadishu, and all of them must be identified and registered," Farah said.
The administration said registered facilities would receive certificates, while those meeting requirements for selling water would receive authorization to supply the market.

Farah said the practice of companies independently producing water, bringing it to the market and setting their own prices without following established procedures was coming to an end.
He said the Banaadir administration had introduced procedures and requirements that water companies must follow.
The official also said authorities would take action against companies that failed to comply with the requirements, adding that some facilities accused of supplying unsafe water had already been shut down.
The administration said it plans to publicly identify companies and wells that comply with the requirements, as well as those found to have violated the procedures.
Authorities urged owners of wells and water companies to complete their registration promptly, warning that those who refuse to comply with official orders would face legal action.
